The inspiration for Father's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. After the mother of a woman named Sonora Smart

Dodd died during childbirth, she and her brothers and sisters were raised by her father, a civil war veteran named William Smart.

In order to express gratitude for everything her father did for her, Dodd wrote in a newspaper article in 1910 that she set up a day

to "instill in her father the same love and respect as her mother.".

At her urging, the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19th of the same year. Father's Day is celebrated in June,

which is no coincidence, as Dodd chose it based on her father's birthday month.
